Edgers
Coming from the twinband or the headrig, the cants or slabs arrive at the edger.
The edger is where the actual dimension lumber is produced.
There exist 4 edger machines: two gang edgers and two shifting edgers. Inside the edgers are sets
of circular saws. In the gang edger the saws (12 in all) remain stationary. The gang
edger can produce 2 x4's, 2 x 6's and 2 x8's. The 4 saws of the shifting edger,
can move left or right independently of one another. This allows setting the saws
to best maximize the product that can be produced from a particular cant. The shifting edger can produce
boards from 1" to 8" thick and from 3" up to 16" in width.
A set of two laser lights above the infeed table are syncronized, one with each saw.
Each light casts a red line down the cant that is about to enter the edger. The edger
operator can then line up the saws by observing the laser light. In this way the
operator can adjust the cant and the saws in order to maximize for grade and lumber recovery.
