Harwood Products has an aggressive timber acquisition
program, buying private, state and federal harvesting contracts.
Reforestation was a company policy long before it became a state
requirement. Tree planting is constantly carried out by Harwood foresters
on logged lands and special care has always been given to returning
harvested lands to their pre-harvest condition. Minimizing environmental
impact is always the forester's top priority.
Harwood Products works very closely with small non-industrial
forest landowners. This group of landowners has historically
been the source of the bulk of acquired resource to run our
sawmill. By encouraging good forest practices we can insure a
steady stream of raw material to our sawmill forever.
Harwood Products is currently working with Smartwood and
Scientific Certification Systems (local certifiers) to make
Third Party Certification available to small forest landowners.
Third Party Certification is a way to assure the end consumer of
wood products that the wood was produced and processed in a
"sustainable" manner, without damaging the forest ecosystem.
It also insures that local communities reap the socioeconomic
benefits of a well managed forest by keeping the jobs here.
The Forest Stewardship Council has been formed to become an
international accreditation body under which both Smartwood and
SCS operate. This movement towards Third Party Certification
may well diminish the contentious debate over management of our
public and private forestlands that has been raging in the west
for the past two decades.
